Sales Rep Tracking

Short definition

Measuring what reps actually do, calls made, follow-ups completed, response time, leads worked, rather than only what they close.

01In practice

How teams actually use it.

Sales rep tracking measures leading indicators instead of lagging ones. Revenue tells you what happened last quarter; behaviour tells you what will happen next. The useful metrics are the ones a rep controls day to day: how fast they respond to a new Grade A lead, how many committed follow-ups they actually complete, how many leads they let go stale, and how much of their queue they work top-down. Tracked well, this is a coaching instrument, not surveillance. It shows a manager which specific habit is costing a specific rep deals. Tracked badly, it becomes an activity-count leaderboard that reps learn to game. The distinction is whether the metrics are tied to lead grade and outcome, or just to volume.

02Worked examples

Three ways it shows up.

  • 01

A rep with high call volume but a 6-hour response time on Grade A leads has a triage problem, not an effort problem.

  • 02

Follow-up completion rate against committed follow-ups is more predictive than total calls.

03Check it yourself

How to tell where you actually stand.

Activity and outcome are different measurements, and one is a poor proxy for the other.

  1. 01Rank your reps by calls made last month, then by revenue closed.
  2. 02Compare the two orders.
  3. 03Where they disagree, activity is not telling you what you have been using it to conclude.
